Ubuntu, GNOME and Design.

Written by James Gifford on March 31, 2012, 4:29 p.m.

I recently had reason to boot into my Fedora VM - it is the latest and greatest Fedora 16 in all its glory. Along the way, I realized something. Fedora's fonts suck.   please note that if you load the full article, you will have a lot, and I mean a lot of screenshots loading. Its a large number of them. Also, I do not mean to insult those who spend their time developing GNOME - you guys rock. And then I realized something else. GNOME's fonts suck. Fedora just uses the default ones.   Let us take a look around, shall we?   First of all, let me make adistinctionbetween what I said in the title, and what it ...

Ubuntu Software Centre has it's first novel!

Written by Roland Taylor on March 29, 2012, 11:21 a.m.

[important] Do you like to read? I do, and finally we readers can have our fix. Ubuntu's Software Centre has it's first novel, by action man David Jordan, called Zhackers. [/important] Oh and guess what. If you purchase this, you are supporting and funding a live action film (yes, live action), made with Open Source Software! Once you purchase it, you'll continue to receive any updates as they land. ZHackers: Visual Effects Preview from David Jordan on Vimeo. An official 2buntu.com review is due soon (as soon as I've begun to dig in. Thanks to David for graciously providing me with a copy for review).   (P.S. Shameless plug, David's work has inspired me to look into getting published ...

Gnome 3.4 Released!

Written by Roland Taylor on March 28, 2012, 10:54 a.m.

Congratulations to Gnome on another spanking release! Gnome 3.4 brings some new and some improved applications. Epiphany is now Web, Gnome Documents has been updated, Boxes is now officially available, and so much more. Gnome 3.4 also means GTK+ 3.4, which means better CSS theming, and smooth scrolling, which is not fully implemented yet (you won't notice it everywhere and there are still some details to be landed). Also, you will notice that there improvements in many areas of the Gnome Desktop (including Gnome Shell) as a result of the Every Pixel Matters effort. One of the improvements I noticed was that Gnome Shell is much smoother. For those spreading the idea that Gnome Shell 3.4 and the rest of ...

LibreOffice is looking for some help (GSoC).

Written by Roland Taylor on March 27, 2012, 2:10 p.m.

GSoC == Google Summer of Code The Google Summer of Code is around the corner, and of course there are several big names involved this time around. We cannot possibly go through all of the projects that are a part of it this year, but we will try in the coming weeks to highlight some of the projects we think you should check out and possibly pitch into if you can. One of these is the popular LibreOffice suite. What LibreOffice needs: A few good men, women, monkeys, and aliens? Okay well the latter two may be a bit unnecessary, but obviously if you are a capable man or woman interested in contributing and learning at the same time, while ...

An Introduction to JavaScript - Part 2

Written by Nathan Osman on March 20, 2012, 9:47 p.m.

In my previous article, I went into quite a bit of detail on the basics of JavaScript. Since I was only able to cover a small subset of JavaScript syntax in the first part, I will pick up right where I left off and we will begin by taking a look at functions. Functions Functions consist of a series of instructions that perform a discrete task or (for lack of a better term) function. An example might clear things up so I will provide one: function calculateArea(radius) { return Math.PI * radius * radius; } Although the purpose of this function should be immediately obvious from its name, let's take a moment to look at each part. First of all, ...

Twitter buys Posterous, Yahoo sues Facebook... what's next? Google buys Microsoft?

Written by Roland Taylor on March 20, 2012, 1:41 p.m.

Warning: This post is a somewhat fun, though thoughtful, look at some of the recent occurrences in the world of technology companies. Don't take it too seriously and send us hate mail. We will ignore you :). Recently the world of technology has been having some major shake ups. More companies are merging, giving up, doing crazy things, and in general acting in ways we never saw coming, then probably ever before in history. Yesterday I read that there is a rumour Samsung may be planning to use BlackberryOS 10 on some devices. The whole thing is making me wonder just what these companies are up to. There's some good, some bad, and some downright stupid going on. Twitter bought ...
