Lubuntu 11.04 was indeed released!

Written by Roland Taylor on April 29, 2011, 3:25 p.m.

Looks like I was right! Of course I didn't know I was right until I saw it confirmed by the guys at OMG Ubuntu. Lubuntu 11.04 is out - but unfortunately I don't have the full details for this non-official (as yet) distro - and their site takes forever to load (not sure why), so I'll leave that for later. Update: Details here: http://lubuntu.net/blog/lubuntu-1104-released

Ubuntu 11.04 spotted in the wild! It's hunting season!

Written by Roland Taylor on April 28, 2011, 1:12 p.m.

Bug hunting season that is :)! Or well... more like go download it NOW! Or you're not as awesome as this cat: [caption id="attachment_489" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="This cat is awesome. Are you?"][/caption] If you have never tried this new version before, be sure to check that your system is compatible with the new Unity interface. If it is, you will be met with a rather slick, rather unique (well, mostly unique) Desktop environment unlike any you may have ever seen before. Unfortunately for some, regular notification icons, gnome-applets, and moving around maximized window buttons, are no longer supported in unity. Thankfully there are guides on askubuntu.com for fixing many of the more annoying changes you may encounter. Okay... so that ...

Natty Drops....

Written by jbell on April 28, 2011, 11:08 a.m.

Apparently at some point this morning (while I was still in bed) Canonical released the final production version of Natty (Ubuntu 11.04). It can be downloaded from their webpage, but I would wait a bit, as it looks like their servers are being hammered right now, as even their webpage isn't functioning properly. Also, if you run into problems, head on over to askubuntu.com there are people on stand by more then willing to help you with your new operating system (as there are major changes from 10.10) And as I mentioned before there is a great primer/guide over at OMG! Ubuntu!.   Let me know in the comments if you got your fresh off the press copy of Natty, ...

Now this is a shock...

Written by Roland Taylor on April 28, 2011, 1:42 a.m.

I'm running an update, Gajim, two or three terminal windows, banshee, firefox with several tabs, Pidgin, Shutter, (just quit blogilo due to an update to Qt) - at the time of writing, and my CPU usage is stay close to the Thirties! Impressed I am! Looks like Natty does better than I noticed :)

How to stop the Banshee monster from devouring your CPU

Written by Roland Taylor on April 28, 2011, 1:36 a.m.

If you're like me, you're not on the Core i7 Bandwagon just yet. That also means you don't yet have all the bells and whistles that come with such super powered processors, and you will be likely to run into a little trouble with CPU hungry apps like Banshee. To be really technical, Banshee itself is not the CPU hog, it's the addins. Same thing with Firefox 4 (as you will soon see); it's the extra features that come with addons that tend to drive your CPU into molasses mode. So... how do we tame the beast? Simple. Open the Banshee preferences, and find all the addins you are not really using, and probably won't for a while: [caption id="attachment_464" ...

Now Blogilo Powered!

Written by Roland Taylor on April 27, 2011, 10 p.m.

From now on, many of my posts will be written from Blogilo :)! This means... well... I'm not sure what it means, but I'm excited about it anyway! One thing it means is I'll be posting more often for sure. =-=-=-=-=Powered by Blogilo =-=-=-=-=Powered by Blogilo

Natty?? Who?? What??

Written by jbell on April 27, 2011, 12:07 p.m.

As many of you know, Natty is starting to gain some speed, as it is expected to drop today, tomorrow (apparentlyI live in the future) so I just wanted to give a little plug for a great Natty guide, provided by the fold over at OMG! Ubuntu. This is a great primer, if you are just getting started with Natty, or if you have been using Natty for a while, you might pick up some tricks that you didn't know before. So here you go.

Fix liferea not starting again after crashing.

Written by Roland Taylor on April 26, 2011, 8:43 p.m.

If you are an avid Liferea user, then you are probably well aware that the version available in the ubuntu repos is rather unstable with browser plugins (even when they are disabled). Often times, this means Liferea will crash without any apparent reason when you try to open some feed items. After crashing, it usually refuses to start again until you reboot. If you try to run it from the command line it will tell you it is already running, but the liferea process will not be visible in the system monitor. I was experiencing this often and getting rather annoyed, until I found the solution. Keep in mind, you must follow this carefully so as to avoid any problems, ...
